It is a Global Health Care awareness event observed annually On the 25th of April. Malaria is spread by the female (Anopheles) mosquito and can cause severe, sometimes fatal illness.

This year 2025, The World Malaria Day theme is “Malaria Ends with US: Reinvest Reimagine Reignite” a grassroots campaign that aims to re-energize efforts at all levels from global policy to Community action to accelerate progress towards malaria elimination. It’s time to recommit to ending malaria. We have the knowledge, life – saving tools and targeted prevention, testing & treatment methods to defeat this disease. We must reinvest in proven interventions Reimagine our strategies to overcome current obstacles and reignite our collective efforts together with countries and communities to accelerate progress towards ending malaria.

WHO is working with countries and areas in the region to develop and Implement intensification strategies, such as targeted drug administration fever screening & treatment & rapid response to all malaria cases.

Two safe and effective vaccines are recommended by WHO : RTS, S and R21. These vaccines are now available in 19 countries.

In India also serum Institute of India (SII) has developed and in providing the R21/Matrix – M malaria Vaccine which is recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) for use in Children in malaria- endemic regions. While the vaccine is being rolled out in other countries, Including same in Africa. It is not currently available in India, as the primary parasite species targeted by this vaccine is found in Africa. SII anticipates that a vaccine tailored to the specific malaria parasite strains in India will take another five years to develop & be available. World malaria day is a platform to grab attention & aid in reducing the risk of people being affected.
